学生吴啸文﹑陈钟﹑周洁﹑华振民及其未婚妻冰玉在听到日军侵华的消息后决定北上抗日，在去战地的途中，他们越来越明白前线更需要弹药﹑粮食和棉衣，于是他们决定募捐。啸文想到了未婚妻李德云家里很有势力，决定去找李家，在前往途中，振民不幸牺牲，陈钟则和父亲陈浩然﹑妹妹明慧相遇。众人到了李家，却不想李家已经投敌，并把他们囚禁起来，在逃跑途中，陈钟兄妹不幸牺牲，陈浩然和周洁的妹妹周柔又被敌人抓住，啸文与周洁则逃到南方。周柔使计灌醉了李父，与陈浩然成功逃脱。最终，周柔与啸文﹑周洁一起奔赴前线。

九一八事变后，郑荣福和妹妹瑞姑从东北逃亡到上海。在上海，他们结识了一群无家可归的人们——东北的旧邻肖胡子，建筑工菊生夫妇，被丈夫遗弃的妇女吴敏……。他们的遭遇也都是不幸的：菊生在为洋人盖高楼时摔伤；在丝厂做工的瑞姑由于参加罢工斗争，被特务殴打；肖胡子和郑福荣因营救瑞姑而被捕；在纱厂做工的吴敏，因得罪工头而被辞退……。他们因为付不出房租，都被房东赶了出去，好容易才在棚户区找到几间破房子。当他们搬进新居的一天晚上——1932年1月28日晚11点45分，日本侵略者的炮声响起来了！在菊生和荣福的提议下，他们决定参加义勇军（女的当护士）。于是，在“保卫民族生存”的口号声中，他们拿起了武器，配合着抗日部队，向敌人冲杀过去……
